I just love Christmas time and Mulled Wine is one of my favorite drinks on a cold winter’s night. Mulled wine has all the of flavors of Christmas rolled into one awesome drink. Almost a much as I like to make coffee for the mornings, I like a warm cup of Mulled wind in the evenings. Yes, mulled wine is another item I like to make in my slow cooker, which rarely gets a rest at my house. My husband and I like to ladle mulled wine into our tea cups and sip. This is one of the few times these tea cups ever get used in my house. We sit and relax by the fire and warm our hands with the nice cup of warmed mulled wine.
History of Mulled Wine
It is believed mulled wine originated back in Roman times to preserve wine about to go bad. You know the Romans were not going to waste the wine. Mulled Wine was then popularized in Victorian times by Charles Dickens novels like a Christmas Carol. Mulled wine is now associated with Christmas due to the popularity of these books. Also in “It’s a Wonderful Life” Clarence the angel orders a mulled wine at the bar.
What is mulled wine? Is a traditional drink made by heating wine and adding sugar, juice and spices. Cinnamon, orange or cloves are typically used. Just about everything that reminds you of Christmas. You will enjoy this adult drink. I had never had this drink until my friend Kristi introduced me to it one cold winters night. Now it is a staple around our house to get us through the winter.
Ingredients for Warmed Mulled Wine:
1 bottle of dry red Wine (really any red wine will do)
1 cup juice (cranberry, orange, whatever you like)
1 orange sliced (optional)
2 Tablespoons brown sugar
2 Tablespoons mulling spices
(if you don’t have mulling spices use, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon cloves, 1/2 teaspoon all spice, 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg. Whole spices or powdered, either are fine)
Directions for Spiced Mulled Wine:
1. Heat slow cooker on high.
2. Open wine and pour all ingredients into slow cooker. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.
3. Put sliced orange in slow cooker and float on top.
3. Let simmer for on high for an hour or so until liquid is hot. Once warmed through the slow cooker can be placed on low.
4. Pour into cups and drink warm. We use a strainer on top of the cup to catch the loose whole spices, if whole spices are used.
